It’s time for the Brazoria County Women’s Center’s annual benefit. This year’s benefit is going to be bigger and better than ever before. The 2009 benefit helped to raise $80,000 and it was a three-day event. This year’s benefit will be a four-day event held Thursday, Aug. 12 through Sunday, Aug. 14 (rain or shine) at the Brazoria County Fairgrounds (901 South Downing Street in Angleton).

The Women’s Center of Brazoria County was established in 1982 to provide services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The center provides advocacy and education services. Two shelters are operated by The Women’s Center.

The shelters provide temporary living accommodations for battered women and their children. Additional services are provided to clients through the center’s five offices located throughout Brazoria County. Services offered by The Women’s Center include group and individual counseling, a 24-hour hotline, a 24-hour hospital accompaniment service and a supervised visitation program. “Our services are designed to help victims regain control of their lives,” said Victim’s Advocate Kathi Perkins Brothers.

This is the eighth year for the Women’s Center benefit and residents are urged to come have a great time while supporting a great cause.

“The benefit was the brainchild of our friend Digger. We were sitting around talking one day when he decided that we needed to do something for Brazoria County.

“And, the rest, as they say, is history,” Tinman said. Included in the four-day event is a Bar-B-Que cook off, merchandise sale, an escorted motorcycle ride, live music, a live auction and a pool tournament.

Raffle tickets will also be sold for a chance to win a golf cart/custom trailer. An all inclusive five day/four night cruise will also be given as a raffle prize.

The live auction will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

Biker church services will be held on Sunday morning. The food sale will begin on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Each cook off team must pay a $25 entry fee. Judges for the cook of include: Manvel Mayor Delores Martin, Judge Jerome Jozwiak, Alvin/Manvel Chamber of  Commerce President/CEO Connie Elies, Judge Gordon Starkenburg, Brazoria County Commissioner Mary Ruth Rhodenbaugh and Brazoria County Sheriff Charles Wagner.

Entertainment for the benefit includes the following bands: Smoking Gun (Friday afternoon), Junior Gordon Band (Saturday), and Southern Kin (Sunday).

“No woman should live in fear. Love should not hurt,” Tin Man added.
